Intro
Mountain peak ski restaurant is located at the top of the beautiful Jinshaling mountain range in central Hebei, at an altitude of ….meters, with direct connection to the ski slopes. Conceptually, it is based on the idea of a mountain pavilion - viewpoint, located at the ski resort, in the middle of the green hills overlooking the valley.
Site and Structure
The project site is located on a steep slope, between two ski gondolas lift that insure the arriving of the ski resort to the top of the mountain. The entrance of the building is directly connected with.
From the entrance, the building is opening in two main branches creating a symbiosis with the landscape. Each of them is facing towards the surrounding mountains. At the end of the branches, a large glass facade frames the surrounding mountains from the interior.
The sloped folded roof shape takes his inspiration from the intention of giving different perspectives of the environments: mountains, valley, and sky.
Architectural Composition and Facades
The composition of the architecture conforms to the topography in order to enable unshielded views of the surrounding landscape to infiltrate the interior space of both the restaurant and the bar.
The external facades of the two volumes are enclosed by louvers, which integrate the building with the surrounding natural landscape and creating contrast with the glass facades oriented to the valley. From this site, you have a panoramic view of the mountains and the valley.
Design Philosophy and Integration with Nature
The building consists of a volume lifted over the ground designed to harmonize in the best possible way with the surrounding nature and blur the lines between being indoors and outdoors. The restaurant was oriented not as a building but a special viewfinder.
The concept is to create a unique experience through combine the natural Environment with the manmade boundary surface. Consecutive folds establish the volume shape in which several strip-shaped clerestory windows bring in natural light and view from outside.
We focused on the relationship among the volumes, spaces, and environment, desiring to create an experience that is truly special and authentic, where nature plays a major part.
Interior Design and Functional Distribution
The restaurant is visible with an inviting entrance and outdoor area to the south, a building that is activated on a sunny day as well as a winter’s day around the fireplaces inside. A functional distribution on two levels is meant to regulate visitor flows and generate spacious, panoramic terraces.
The interior of the building is dominated with durable materials like pinewood and carpet, to prevent slipping with ski boots. The dining area is designed as an open space, with self-service islands of different thematic areas and various colors, providing for free-flow consumption. Inner spaces have been designed to flexibly adapt to different purposes. Visitors can find a safe haven by the large fireplace within the volume space, while enjoying the local food and scenery looking out through the large glass surfaces.
Unique Features and Sustainable Design
The rugged stone elements convey durability, while the warm timber accents add a touch of natural beauty. These folded facades not only add depth and texture to the exterior but also provide practical benefits. The stone ensures insulation and durability, while the timber contributes to sustainability.
Large windows strategically positioned on the folded surfaces offer breathtaking panoramic views of the mountains and create a play of light and shadow. Internally, the folded facades shape unique interior spaces, creating intimate seating areas and allowing guests to enjoy the surrounding mountain views. The architecture seamlessly integrates with nature, blending the built environment with the natural landscape. Peak Mountain restaurant stands as an exemplar of the harmonious integration of folded facades and natural materials. It celebrates the beauty of the mountains while incorporating sustainable design principles. Guests are invited to immerse themselves in an extraordinary dining experience where architecture, nature, and the use of natural materials converge in perfect harmony.
The volume is shaped from the inside, each focusing on the views and the qualities of the different interior spaces. The natural over light and the large glass panels always give the inside a calming variation of the natural color specter throughout the day and through all kinds of weather – while keeping contact with the sky. The outdoor space is defined by a big terrace oriented towards the southwest.
The terrace allows outdoor après-ski program, offering beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valley. Peak Mountain restaurant is a captivating architectural establishment nestled within a stunning mountainous landscape. The design showcases folded facades that seamlessly blend with the natural environment. Carefully selected natural materials, including locally sourced stone and sustainably harvested timber, enhance the visual appeal and connection to the mountain landscape. The folded facades pay homage to the angular forms of the surrounding peaks, creating a subtle yet engaging relationship with the natural surroundings.
