Insertion

The new accommodating buildingfinds the perfect balance between congruity and harmony with the context,thanks to minimal intervention, essentially like acupuncture. The new structureis a compact and precise element that fits among the existing mountain rocks,thus occupying a portion of land.

The insertion of the modernbuilding draws inspiration from several characteristics of the preexistingephemeral structures, for instance, prefabrication, modularity and constructivesimplicity, enhanced by the use of typical local materials such as wood.

Visitors can immediately feel the presence of the vast nature when immersed in the mountains. Hence, the design generator is based on integration into the mountains and nature, rather than cultural expression or history.

Grown from the natural topography rather than dropped from the sky – the ar­chitecture extends the organic forms of natural landscape creating a new artificial slope roof that has mountain shape. As a result, our design for ski hall creates a new hybrid integrating distinct identities such as village and resort, shelter and openness, cozy intimacy and natural maj­esty, unique character and careful continuity – or simply – architecture and landscape.

The irregular shape of the building was formed by reinterpretation of the terrain. Its’ gentle sloping roof allows topographic integration and blends the structure into the surrounding landscape.

The fractured surface of the roof rises and returns into the terrain, and the function facilities are neatly tucked under it. The roof height adjusts to follow the facilities and contents thus contributing to the dynamics of the different functions.

The soft curves of the undulating roofs of the building create a visual continuity of the natural land­scape while lending the whole architecture the unique character of a ski slope skyline that creates an inhabited mountain top.

The natural gradient of the terrain is met by a concrete base which contains all the services and infrastructure at disposition to the various sportsmen and women. The plinth merges from the ground, creating a large terrace, that provide direct access to the plaza level +1129.

On this concrete base sits the steel accommodative structure, which contains the reception and the ticket office on the ground floor, the staff, service spaces and staff management in f02, the bars, the kitchens, the restaurants in f03, the rent zone, the ski school in f04 and refectory areas like children activities as spa and massage center in f05 which, thanks to a system of modular and movable walls, can be disposed to form a large space for special events.

In the upper part the hotel, orientated in south west, can offer the better view of the land and enjoying the sun set. All the rooms are arranged according to a regular and precise module, optimizing management of the different types of utilities, with a clear but flexible distinction between "quality"  and "quantity".

All indoor spaces are connected via service corridor and a clear double system of mechanical stairs, along the mountain terrace, while three large vertical point houses the elevators cater to the need of skiers and their gear. There is also an indoor ski facility provided for kids for their fun and exploration, which can be used as a shelter for all during sudden changes in the weather.

A custom designed horizontal shutter system creates privacy and also protects upholstery and art from harsh snow glare. The façade can transform from glass clad to semi-exposed with raw-edged louvers, to completely protected with weathered steel.

Our main goal was to create a design that would allow it to withstand its harsh mountain climate. This is a mountain home that’s almost completely wrapped in operable devices to protect it from weather conditions. The steel and wood shutter system allows the glazing to be fully exposed, or totally buttoned up, or somewhere in between.

The roof and plan is sculptured to adapt to the scale of the site and the surrounding landscape. The hotel is cladded in wide laminated horizontal wood planks and which makes the large building appear smaller.

The use of wood as a construction material guarantees excellent environmental and energy characteristics, improving the general sustainability of the new settlement. The dry construction can be easily disassembled and the wood disposed of and reused without ecological consequences.

Timber has been used extensively inside and out to create the warm “feeling” of the “traditional” mountain chalet without adopting the traditional form. The glass exterior (particularly to the south wall) is the other feature of the building – allowing full exposure to the magnificence view.

At level +1130(f04) is located theexit for join the gondola, walking through a big open space. This open plazaallows ice skating and music events and is connected to a bowl like yard withcafés and bars. The intimate atmosphere of the spaces created here contraststhe open views from the summit.
